Registration Ending Soon for Emerging Minority Leaders Conference

Aug21
2008
Written by Webmaster

California State PTA will be holding its first-ever Emerging Minority Leaders Conference on Saturday, September 20, 8:30 AM-4:00 PM at the Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel in Oakland (view map). The conference is designed to respond to the growing diversity in our public schools and communities and to help PTAs throughout the state best serve all children and families. Participants from across the state will have the opportunity to learn about cultural competence, network with other parent leaders from across the state, and take home practical strategies for increasing inclusion and PTA involvement in their schools. This conference is especially for you if you are interested in growing as a PTA leader, and want an opportunity to share experiences with fellow emerging minority PTA leaders.

The deadline to register for this conference is September 2nd. The registration fee of $65 covers all conference materials and meals that day. It is a legitimate PTA expense to send one of your officers to this training, so if you are interested in attending, you should get in touch with your unit or council, or contact our 17th District president if you are interested in going and you might be able to have the $65 cost covered for you.

There is more information on State PTA’s website, where you can also download the registration form [PDF].

Legislation Action Alert: PTA Urges Legislators to Support Conference Committee Budget

Aug15
2008
Written by Webmaster

The following information has been reprinted from the State PTA website and the August 14th Legislation Action Alert.

There has been a lot of negotiations, talk and rumors inside the state capitol in the past few days about the state budget. The Assembly may call for a vote soon (as early as Sunday) on the Legislative Conference Committee’s budget proposal. California State PTA supports this Conference Committee Budget because it takes a balanced approach and prevents deeper cuts to education and children’s programs.

PLEASE phone or email your state legislators and the Governor IMMEDIATELY and urge them to:

  • Stand up for children!
  • Support the conference committee budget because it takes a balanced approach and prevents deeper cuts to education and children’s services.
  • Oppose any efforts that would undercut the Proposition 98 school funding guarantee in future years

To find your legislators’ email address, please go to Find Your Legislator.
