About

The Seventeenth District PTA is one of 29 district PTAs organized by the California State PTA. We represent 99 local PTA/PTSA associations in San Mateo County (known as “units”)–72 of which are a part of 7 councils, and 27 of which do not belong to a council (“out-of-council units”). 17th District has 20,018 members (as of the 2009-10 membership year) among its units. See our Units and Councils page for more information.

The district serves as the connecting link between the local unit and council PTAs and the California State PTA, and is responsible for collecting information from units and councils to send to State PTA, and also for disseminating information from State PTA to units and councils. 17th District also provides numerous resources to unit and council PTAs, including officer training events. The district is also responsible for helping to form a new unit and to disband a unit (something that we don’t like to see happen).

17th District also puts on numerous events for schools and associations in San Mateo County. Our annual Superintendents Luncheon in November is a place for PTA members to meet and chat with principals and superintendents from the county. Our annual Founder’s Day Luncheon in February celebrates the anniversary of the founding of PTA, in which we present Honorary Service Awards to members of the community who have made significant contributions to PTA, and elect our new officers every other year. We also hold an annual “Spotlight on PTA” May Event which comprises of a training, speaker, and (every other year) installation of new officers. In addition, 17th District hosts Candidates Forums when county school board elections are approaching, and also represents PTA on many county and community committees. 17th District is also a contributor to the San Mateo County Community Schools program.

17th District holds three annual meetings per year, in October, February, and May, where we bring business to the general membership of 17th District, and often present speakers and other information as well. Anyone who is a member of one of the local units within 17th District is automatically a member of 17th District and is eligible to participate and vote at our general meetings.
