9/23 Parent Ed Event: California’s Schools: America’s Future
Posted by Webmaster in 17th District News, Events, Health/Community Concerns, Parent Involvement on September 11, 2009
In the 1950′s and 60′s, California had one of the best school systems in the country. Now it has one of the worst. What happened in the course of 40 years that led to this decline? And what is California doing to raise its system back up? This was the premise behind John Merrow’s award-winning 2004 television documentary, First to Worst. Last year, he produced an update called California’s Schools: America’s Future, which aired on PBS on June 5, 2008.
Please join us for a free educational forum to view California’s Schools: America’s Future, followed by a panel discussion moderated by John Merrow. Panel members will include:

The event will take place at 7-9 PM at the Hillsdale High School Auditorium, 3115 Del Monte Street, in San Mateo. (view map). 17th District PTA is endorsing this event and we encourage you to attend. Please RSVP to t…@advocatesfc.org.
San Mateo County Children and Youth Bill of Rights
Posted by Webmaster in 17th District News, Health/Community Concerns on December 12, 2008
At our October General Membership Meeting, 17th District PTA adopted the San Mateo County Children and Youth Bill of Rights. This document, which was formally introduced on October 28th, was created by the Peninsula Partnership Leadership Council (PPLC) (which 17th District is a part of) and the San Mateo County Youth Commission, a group of youth representatives age 14-21. San Mateo is only the second county in the nation to adopt a Bill of Rights for its children and youth, following Multnomah County in Oregon (Portland area). The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors adopted this Bill of Rights on October 7 (Resolution No. 069726) and are also encouraging every city council and school board in the county to adopt it. 17th District is encouraging its units and councils to adopt this Bill of Rights as well.
The Bill of Rights, as adopted by 17th District PTA, is printed below.
